What's On
The following information is an update of our 2008 schedule. We encourage you to attend any (or all!) of these events as they will no doubt be hugely entertaining. This schedule is hardly ever final, however, as we are always adding new upcoming events, so remember to keep checking back here every so often! At the end of each year we do some community service events prior to the Christmas break, and start again in the following February. If you'd like to attend one of our rehearsals, or to audition for the Choir please contact us.
A FAMILY CHRISTMAS CONCERT
Massed Youth Voices Join in One-Off Christmas Concert
It's one of the biggest massed youth choirs in the country, and it will perform in Auckland for a 'one off' special Christmas concert on Tuesday 09 December.
The 'Celebration of Youth' combines the Auckland Youth Choir, Auckland Boys' Choir, the Auckland Girls' Choir and the Aotea Youth Symphony in a "Celebration of Youth at Christmas" concert at Holy Trinity Cathedral - approximately 190 young singers and musicians.
Holy Trinity Organist, Philip Smith will also accompany the concert on Organ.
Young people from 8 to 26 years will sing a variety of popular Christmas music for the 1 ½ hour long, evening's entertainment. Family favourites such as "Silent Night", "Awa In A Manger" and "O Come All Ye Faithful" will feature.
The concert is becoming an annual event, each year growing in size and popularity. With this in mind The Holy Trinity Cathedral has become the venue of choice to accommodate the swelling number of concert goers – over 700 are expected.
"This is an amazing experience – both for the audience and the young people performing," says Leonie Lawson, Director of Music of the Auckland Girls' Choir. "It gives youth, many of whom will progress into full time music careers, a chance to perform on a scale seldom realised. We do this concert annually. And every year these youngsters gain in confidence and professional experience through this one event. It's an entrée into a much higher level of musical poise."
A Christmas tree will be erected for the Concert, and children of families attending are encouraged to bring a gift to place under the tree instead of paying an entry fee. The Anglican Trust for Women and Children and KidzFirst Children's Hospital will benefit.
"It's a concert for the whole family. You'll even get a chance to join in the singing for some of the numbers!" says Leonie.
