Being a part of the AYC Development and Mentoring programme throughout 2021 and 2022 was an invaluable opportunity for me to develop as a young conductor and choral musician. Over these two years I was able to hone my skills in repertoire selection & programming, rehearsal pedagogy, conducting gesture and more. By far, the most crucial aspect of this programme was the opportunity for podium time. In my second year I was lucky enough to self-direct the chamber singers. This agency allowed me to grow my confidence and leadership style in a safe, inclusive environment, far beyond what I could have imagined would be possible in this role. As a composer as well, I was privileged to have one of my pieces sung by the choir in my second year of the programme. I strongly believe that this role has allowed me to pursue the opportunities I am blessed to be pursuing today. This programme is a taonga for all young choral professionals and the choral community across Tamaki Makaurau and Aotearoa as a whole. I would strongly urge any enthusiastic young conductors, pianists, composers, administrators, and singers to apply for these roles.
