The AYC Development and Mentoring program is easily the best opportunity for young choral composers in Aotearoa. It has been a huge kickstart that gave me tools I couldn't learn elsewhere about community music making. My piece, "Haeata", challenged me creatively and allowed me to broaden my horizons as a composer while also developing the language to communicate my intentions with performers. At every turn, I had absolute support from both the artistic team and singers which helped me to feel safe as a young composer. I couldn't be more thankful for this amazing opportunity. What started as a small thought at the piano grew into a premier performance of 120 singers and a sold out audience, which I will treasure as I continue my musical journey.
